You are correct, Parent charts by design do not follow a drill path when selected, instead they stay to show the filters they have applied to other charts on the page.
However, If I understand I think that you actually would like all the charts to drill down to the next level when you select an item in the parent chart, otherwise as you say a category filter would do what you want.
This could potentially be achieved using either drill to category or object swapping.
Drill to category would allow you to drill to a new page, passing the filter and allow all the charts on the new page to display at the new level.
Object swapping would allow you (through manual #~object~# and {{filter}}) control allow you to change the axis objects and filters in charts using category objects.
It might be worth contacting support - one of our consultants could I am sure help you with exploring these potential solutions.
